"Accurate" is defined here as the ability to reproduce the tones, timbre, dynamics, and environmental details of the original recording with as little variation as possible over the widest possible frequency range, subject to unavoidable price and size constraints. Of course, this is also a roundabout, indirect definition, because if you're not playing it on a speaker, how do you know what it sounds like? If we choose an artistic record, we should assume that it can be played back almost as real as the original performance. Although recording devices (such as microphones) can differ in inherent sound quality as speakers, the actual sound quality difference between several good recordings should be much less than the difference between one good and one mediocre speaker.
